Jab’s Builds: Primal Rage

PRIMAL RAGE:

This has gotta go down as one of the biggest video game disappointments ever- I mean, it’s a digitized game in the vein of Mortal Kombat, but with Harryhausen-esque GIANT DINOSAURS doing the fighting. How is that NOT the greatest idea of all time? A Dinosaur FIGHTING GAME? With Fatalities, consumption of human beings, and a Life Bar that ends in a heart that EXPLODES when you lose? And yet… the game was a disappointment.

The problems:
* The fighting system was quite basic and forgettable- I remember it being pretty bad, and most reviews corroborate that. The controls were a hell of a thing, and involved multiple button-presses for Special Moves.
* The animation was choppy and looked pretty weak.
* There were only SEVEN characters available to play! In an era where the default for a 2-D Fighter was pretty much at least 10 (and with King of Fighters, it was going much higher), that was absolutely stupid- and worse yet, because of Palette Swaps, there were only FIVE original bodies (Chaos/Blizzard and Diablo/Sauron share sprites)!
* There wasn’t even a BOSS! You just fought the other six characters, then an endurance round, and that was it! An update/sequel was planned with a Skeletal Dragon-thing, but never materialized.
* It came out at a pretty bad time- it was too advanced for the still-popular 16-bit systems, but not advanced enough for the 32-bit systems.

So what should have been an amazing game ended up being rather forgettable, and a hyped-up sequel never materialized, as Atari (the game’s developers) gave up on the concept bearing fruit (and this, after a massive hype storm that included comic book and toy tie-ins- a rarity for a game just starting out, not to mention releases on basically EVERY SYSTEM EVER, from the friggin’ Game Boy to the JAGUAR CD!!). Such is life.

A sequel was supposed to come out, but it was cancelled during the first phases, owing to Atari believing that it wouldn’t generate enough sales. Enough work had been done to create several new characters (alternate forms of the main dinos, plus a Final Boss), but the game was unplayable… until people found the Arcade machine’s board just a couple of years ago, letting people play a buggy version of the game. The Dino Gods now have “Avatars”- large-sized human beings that fight on their behalf. Unfortunately, while dinosaurs look good in Claymation… human beings DON’T. The graphics and art style suffers greatly in these circumstances.

The story is simple: A meteor has destroyed civilization, and “Urth” is now ruled by powerful Gods who do battle for it’s control. You play one of the Gods, and attempt to “Conquer” all the other segments of the planet. Six Gods (and one Shaman turned into a giant ape) fight, and may devour the followers that run about the bottom of the screen for more health (devour you own, and you lose points). Despite being able to select from the entirety of Prehistoric Life for its characters, the game chooses two Tyrannosaurs, two Giant Apes, a Raptor, and two made-up hybrids, thus robbing us of Pterosaurs, Hadrosaurs, Ankylosaurs, Stegosaurs, Aquatic Reptiles, Mammoths, Sabre-Toothed Cats, and more. The sequel would have added a Sabre-Toothed Cat & a Dragon-skeleton thing, but that was it.

The Dinosaurs tend to be about 21 feet tall by my estimation (the game uses pretty big sprites for the humans, and they’re about 1/3 to 1/4 as tall as the Dinosaurs when standing straight up), so will use the same amount of Growth, despite the fact that some are clearly bigger than others- it’s just neater than way since most aren’t THAT excessively larger (similar to how a 6’6″ human doesn’t have more Growth than a 5’11” one). Most guys have Expertise (Magic) since they’re Gods, despite there being little evidence for it in some cases.

-Sauron (no relation to Marvel’s or Tolkien’s) is probably the most iconic character of Primal Rage, despite Blizzard being so heavily-featured on most of its advertising. He is a giant yellow & purple T-Rex (though since the game’s human sprites are so large, Sauron is notably smaller than an ordinary T-Rex should be!) using the classic “Tripod Stance” (long since discredited by Paleontology, though it’d be hard to pull off in a Fighting Game since it’d make his stance very easy to hit (he’d go halfway across the screen and have a MASSIVE “Hit Box” to strike). As the God of Hunger, he wants to eat EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, but is still technically a good guy for some reason.

-You’d think a red T-Rex who is THE GOD OF EVIL would be pretty bad-ass. I mean, he takes Satan’s attributes and is a giant theropod- how could that NOT be awesome? But they went and made him TINY compared to Sauron & Blizzard (a similar problem befell Chaos), and so he looks a lot less impressive than he should. He’s more of a Ranged fighter than other characters, with Area & Ranged Blasts, and so he’s the only character to not be a balanced PL 12 in melee and a full PL 12 at Range.

-Armadon is the God of Life, and since the game has a limited number of characters, he combines a few different sets of attributes into one form, taking a Ceratopsian form, making it bipedal, and adding spikes all around it and a club tail like an Ankylosaurid. Warhammer Fantasy Battle does a similar thing with its Stegadons (part of the Lizardmen Army), since they had to concentrate a lot of the “big tough herbivorous” types into one form. He fights a bit like Blanka, with startling Diving & Leaping attacks, as well as proving highly defensive and tough compared to the others.

-Chaos is a disgusting fighter who utilizes puking and farting as attacks, giving the game a more infantile approach than you’d expect (I mean, is it so much to ask for that the game of Giant Dinosaurs & Apes Beating the Piss Out of Each Other just goes for straight-up ass-kickery?), much like Boogerman, released around the same time. He’s also the only one who didn’t start out in this form (he’s a regular person turned into a God), and is a Palette Swap of Blizzard (the more important character), only shrunk down. This kind of makes me wonder why anyone would play Chaos- not only are his attacks all silly, but he’s actually SMALLER than another Ape character in the same game!

-As a shrimpier fighter, Chaos actually ends up equally-balanced with his offense & defense, because he’s just the right size of ape to be super-strong, BUT also have a decent amount of accuracy. There’s a divide of about two points in either direction between Chaos, Diablo & Vertigo and the super-sized Sauron & Armadon.

-Blizzard is the first of the two Giant Ape characters, which of course is a phenomenal idea because what goes better with Dinosaurs than KING FREAKING KONG? Blizzard is basically a giant Yeti, allowing the developers to rip off Mortal Kombat‘s Sub-Zero along with Kong.

-Talon was pretty much a necessity in this game- only a year or so after Jurassic Park, you NEEDED Raptors in each and every Dinosaur-based thing (that movie pretty much single-handedly forged a new Stock Dinosaur for all Dino-media- some people had known about Deinonychus and others for years, but this cemented them as part of pop culture). He comes up much cheaper than the others since all of his attacks are basically “jump in and slash away” stuff instead of Blasts, making him one of the only guys without a ranged attack. However, he CAN throw out a Multiattack weapon.

And of course it’s odd that the Dinosaur Fighting Game with SEVEN GUYS in it uses one entirely fictional creature. What- they couldn’t think of another one? Vertigo is the priciest God, seeing as how she’s got Acid (okay in the game it’s just a Blast, but that’s boring), Teleportation and stuff, but she’s still in the Chaos/Diablo class of size & power.

-Necrosan was to be the Final Boss of Primal Rage‘s last incarnation in the Arcades (Arcade Machines were frequently “updated” back in the day- the same way modern developers release half-finished games and then “update” them later with full features), but Atari nixed the update in favor of Primal Rage 2, which was never made. Necrosan thus got put into the sequel, and is said to have been inside the meteor that caused the destruction in the first game.

  1. I remember this game. I think kids were initially excited because it was not only a violent fighting game, but there were poo jokes involved. But yeah, they could’ve done much more with the concept.
