A lot of this documentary is recap from “Downfall: The Case Against Boeing” the other Boeing documentary that Rory Kennedy directed, but that’s ok. There were 4 years between films. If you didn’t have the ability to binge them both together, it would be needed.
“Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing” focuses a lot more on the families involved and the numerous employees of Boeing who have come forth as whistleblowers against the company for there blatant disregard for quality checking and quality management.
We also learn about the five CEOs who, since the Boeing merger, have taken a more “profit over quality and safety” style management then the workforce at Boeing were used too. Outsourcing, removal of vital quality control experts, hiring of untrained employees, outsourcing vital construction elements to numerous countries who don’t communicate with each other, pushing the workforce into building more planes faster then they should, and building a new production plant in South Carolina, a state that does not allow a workforce to unionize, all play vital factors in the equation of Boeing’s poorly made products.
It’s a scary thing when you consider how many people are flying on these planes everyday.
“Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing” made me angry. Which is a good thing, a compliment for how well the documentary was constructed under the direction of master documentarian Rory Kennedy. She knows how to get the emotions stirring in her viewers and she knows how to engage those viewers with provocative stories that should be known and focused on by not only her viewers but all people of a nation and the world.
I can’t believe that Boeing hasn’t been forced to recall every single plane that they have built in the past years since these issues had started. It’s frustrating and anger inducing to know that the reason why is that they are located in a country that values profit much more than human life. Both of its own citizens as well as the people of the world.
Thank you Ms. Kennedy for another excellently made documentary.
