Disclaimer: I have never been to a winery, never spoken to a sommelier, and don’t even know the difference between a merlot, and a Pinot noir. That being said…

GROCERY OUTLET WINE REVIEW #3: Timber wood Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2011
Suggested price – $8
Grocery outlet price – $3
Alcohol content – 13.2%
Tastes – Dried fruit roll ups (pear), saccharine, finished with raw fruits.
Pairs well with – Buttered toast, jellybeans, Nutella on bananas

With a $3 price tag, I was expecting watered down fruit juice with a spoiled fruit taste. I wasn’t completely wrong. The straight forward flavors are good: pears and the type of grapes you find on your friend’s mom’s backyard grapevine, who doesn’t know much about gardening.

I enjoyed this bottle with Shiiky, over some rosemary chicken and rice w/canned green beans, then later with Dino bites the next day. Great alone, but “just meh… With food.” according to Shiiky. Chilled, this Pinot Grigio doesn’t leave you disappointed. When warm, the non-offensive flavors are much more evident. Easy to drink fast, but harder to catch as buzz from.

The bottle looks fancy, and overall it could pass as a higher quality wine, than $3. Tastes like a $10 wine.

7.5/10

GROCERY OUTLET WINE REVIEW #4: Lost Angel – Mischief Red Wine 2012

Suggested price – $12

Grocery outlet price – $4

Alcohol content – 13.5%

Tastes – almost spoiled Capri Sun (pacific cooler) Gummi Bears (any brand that’s not Haribo) plum, box wine

Pair with: Mac N’ chee, sandwiches, hot afternoons indoors, anything salty or dry

This screw-top red blend bills itself as “Naughty wine for nighty times” and I have to think that it’s geared towards the high school/young twenties girls who wanna catch a buzz, but do it with all the sophistication of Courtney Cox in Cougartown. Simply put, you could do a beer bong of this wine no questions asked. There is zero hint of an alcohol burn, and all the flavor you’d come to expect from a Sangria flavored box wine, but at half the cost, and twice the class… You know, because of the bottle…

A light Amber-Orange color is the first thing I noticed when pouring my first glass. Not a good sign… I was expecting a tangy acid bite that usually comes with most econo-reds. As previously mentioned, I was spared that plight. I had to check the label to make sure it was a full strength wine, and not an O’ Doul’s type product. I really enjoyed the flavor once I settled into my acceptance of what I was drinking. It really does make my mouth water, as I take sizable gulps.

It’s technically wine, but go into it imagining the name Welches is on the label, and you won’t be shocked. All in all, would buy again for my next sorority party.

7/10
